In our daily lives we keep struggling with kicking out thoughts that are not pleasing to God. The battle between our flesh that wants its own way and the spiritual part that wants to please God is continuous. We are tempted when we are enticed and carried away by our lusts, thus allowing temptation to exercise its power over us. Fighting temptation is hard especially when we blame ourselves because we are tempted. God has not left us helpless. He has provided a way of escape for us so long as we put our trust in Him.
No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and He will not let you be tempted beyond your strength, but with the temptation will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it.
1 Corinthians 10:13
The devil knows our weakest point, and this is where he tempts us the most. Thus, we sin when we give in to temptation by focussing on the passing pleasures of sin rather than the rich rewards which comes from serving God. We may not be able to control what comes into our mind, but we can control what stays there. We need the grace of God to do this and that is why we go to Him for help. Jesus not only memorized the word of God which he used to defeat Satan in the wilderness, but He used it effectively. When temptation becomes unbearable, what do we do? Do you believe the lies of Satan or do you believe the truth from the word of God? First, we should arm ourselves with the word of God which is truth and we will be set free (John 8:32). Resist the devil with the word of God (James 4:7b). Avoid situations that will lead us into sin (Romans13:14). Fill your mind with the Word of God (Psalm 119:11). Avoid friends who entice you to sin (Proverbs 1:10). And finally, guard your thought life.
